71% of physicians want major changes to Affordable Care Act

Survey Conducted by Kantar Health and Sermo Shows Large Majority of US Physicians Support an Overhaul of the Recently Upheld Healthcare Law

Nearly three in four US physicians feel Congress needs to enact major changes in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), according to research conducted by Kantar Health, a leading healthcare-focused global consultancy and marketing insights company, in collaboration with Sermo, the leading physician online community in the U.S.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold most of the ACA last month, more than 1,500 US physicians responded regarding their preference for the law once the next Congress convenes in January 2013. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they prefer the law be repealed altogether and new bipartisan initiatives undertaken, while 14% would keep the law but undertake major bipartisan revisions. Twenty-six percent favor keeping the law and “fine tuning” it over time. Only three percent of respondents answered “don’t know.”

“Our survey shows that a large majority of physicians are not in favor of the Affordable Care Act as it currently stands, and the political establishment should be more thoughtful and collaborative in its implementation,” says Richard W. Martin, a spokesman for Kantar Health. “By all indications physicians desire and can support healthcare reform legislation, they are just not in favor of the law as it has been passed.”

Kantar Health in conjunction with Sermo conducted this survey in the week immediately following the Supreme Court ruling.
