Sermo Closes $9.5 Million in Series B Funding Led by SoftBank Capital
Investment to Fuel Next-Phase of Growth for Nation's Largest Online Physician Community
Cambridge, Mass., January 23, 2007 — Sermo (http://www.sermo.com), the fastest growing online community created by physicians, for physicians, today announced the closing of a $9.5 million round of Series B funding. This latest round is led by new investor SoftBank Capital, with additional funds from existing investors Longworth Venture Partners who initially funded the Company. The new proceeds will be used to further develop the Sermo community, which has grown dramatically since first launching in late September 2006.
To date, almost 6,000 doctors from all 50 states in over 30 different specialties have joined this groundbreaking medical forum to share insights, learn from each other's experiences, and most importantly, discuss how they can improve patient care. Currently, the Sermo community is increasing by 400-600 physicians every week. This latest investment will allow Sermo to keep pace with the growing physician demand for new features and functionality.
"Sermo's easy to use technology allows physicians to consult virtually with a broad range of practicing colleagues in a manner previously not possible," said Steve Murray, Partner, SoftBank Capital. "Sermo Founder and CEO Dr. Daniel Palestrant and his tremendously capable team have made enormous progress to date in making Sermo the largest community site of its kind. We are thrilled to join them and Longworth as the Company enters its next phase of growth."
Sermo is based on the recognition that large numbers of experts "on the inside," like practicing physicians, are better at solving problems and predicting future events than a single individual or even a small group of experts. By expanding medical discussions to include a diverse community of thousands of physicians, rather than limiting it to a select few, Sermo is accelerating the discovery of emerging trends and new insights into medications, devices, and treatments.
The additional funding will also play a critical role in the development of new client interfaces designed to capture early insights and trends as they happen on Sermo. Based on a system of information arbitrage, Sermo's unique business model allows government health organizations, financial services firms and industry analysts to access real-time information coming directly from the front lines of medicine -- all through a customized web interface designed to meet their specific interests. Ultimately, this model is giving physicians a collective voice while creating a new information exchange for improving patient care that has never before been possible.
"The growth that Sermo has experienced since its launch in September is truly a testament to the demand among physicians in this country to be able to collaborate with each other in real time to improve patient care and speed development of new technologies," said Founder and CEO, Daniel Palestrant, MD. "As we focus on the next-phase of growth for Sermo, we anticipate that our physician community will continue to gain momentum as more physicians log on and experience the power this unique medium has to offer. In addition, as the community expands, our clients will receive more and more insights into the latest medical trends as they are happening -- coming directly from the physicians on the front lines. "

About Sermo
Launched September 2006, Sermo is already the fastest growing online community, created by physicians for physicians. Its Web-based platform provides a medium for physicians to aggregate observations from daily practice then - rapidly and in large numbers - challenge or corroborate each other's opinions, accelerating the emergence of trends and new insights on medications, devices and treatments. Through Sermo, physicians exchange knowledge with each other the minute it is learned, and gain insights from colleagues as they happen instead of waiting to read about them in conventional media sources. Sermo harnesses the power of collective wisdom and enables physicians to discuss new clinical findings, report unusual events, and work together to dramatically impact patient care.
